This new renovation in Camps Bay, Cape Town centers around transforming a home’s fragmented interior and exterior spaces into a unified, flowing entertainment area. The existing structure, while well-built, presents a significant challenge in spatial connectivity, particularly with the exterior pool and patio, which sit nearly two meters below the main living areas. This elevation difference disrupts both the physical flow and the visual connection between spaces, creating a sense of separation.
The most pivotal new design change is the relocation of the pool. By moving it to the front of the property, sun exposure is maximised and panoramic ocean views are enhanced, creating a stronger connection between the home and its surroundings. This intervention also allows us to repurpose the original pool shell for new internal spaces, including a cinema, change room, and sauna. By breaking through the wall of the existing entrance foyer, we establish direct access to the cinema, seamlessly integrating it into the home’s interior. The changing room and sauna now serve as functional extensions of the new pool area.
To further enhance the spatial flow, we plan to excavate a passage alongside the former pool shell, creating a new access route leading to a bespoke barbeque deck. This deck occupies the former patio level, now functioning as a split-level space between the main entertainment area, the pool, and the change room & sauna. The careful calibration of heights across these zones will ensure uninterrupted ocean views from all levels, adding to the sense of openness and cohesion.
Though surrounded by neighboring properties, the home benefits from the dense perimeter of mature trees, providing natural privacy without obstructing the western vistas. This thoughtful integration of indoor and outdoor spaces provides an opportunity to create a tranquil retreat, where the architecture harmonizes with both the landscape and the homeowner’s lifestyle.
